PreS-Gr 1—Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! meets If You Give a Moose a Muffin starring a panda living in a zoo. Pandamonia is defined as "complete and utter chaos, often following the disturbance of a blissfully sleeping panda." Yes, a woken panda gets very grumpy. The admonition to "just don't wake the panda whatever you do" is repeated as the narrator enumerates the hullabaloo that will ensue among the other animals if the panda awakens. "Flamingos and dingoes all do the fandango./The chinchillas cha-cha./The tamarins tango./Yes, waking the panda could cause a stampede,/and here at the zoo/that's the last thing we need." The final spread features a close-up of the panda opening his eyes on the left page and one word on the right page, "Oops…." The rhyming text is quite fun to read, but beware the occasional tricky word such as titchy, echidna, palaver, and jabirus. The wood block-style illustrations on a solid color background are a jumble of animals, colors, and plants that all perfectly represent the chaos following waking a panda.
VERDICT An excellent storytime read-aloud and great starting point for learning about animals from all over. Good for collections of all sizes.
