K-Gr 3—Following the unrest in Ferguson, MO, in late 2014, artists, business owners, and volunteers came together to paint the plywood that covered windows in the area with colorful art and messages of love, peace, and hope. Celebrating the Painting for Peace project, this book employs sparse, rhyming language and features photographs of the volunteers at work. The diversity of the participants and the variety of subject matter, artistic styles, and talents are well represented in the images. The upbeat rhythm of the text clashes with the heavy subject matter, but the power of the visuals cannot be denied.
VERDICT There's a lot of local appeal here, but this title can also be used in other communities as a jumping-off point for discussions about unrest and the healing that follows.
