Gr 10 Up—Filmmaker Matthew Smith draws on his own experiences as well as those of a few celebrities in this optimistic documentary. The film targets LGBTQ youth with the intent of helping those who face bullying and ostracism. Interviews with celebrities, such as Carson Kressley (Queer Eye), Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis, Broadway star Josh Strickland, Oscar nominee Eric Roberts and his wife, and others show how they coped with stereotypes related to their sexual preferences and complement the story of Smith's relationship with his partner, Solly Henus. Also interwoven are scenes that parody 1960s mental hygiene films and Twilight Zone episodes that are likely to appeal more to college students. A riff on Rod Serling's on-camera smoking as well as a single instance of the F-word could give teachers pause before using this unrated film in the classroom. However, it is highly recommended for public libraries where its depiction of healthy, happy gay people and their allies could provide a lifeline to young adults desperately in need of its feel-good message.—Beth Gallego, Los Angeles Public Library, CA
