Gr 3-7–Siblings Harper and Dylan were resigned to spend summer at a camp called Camp Woo Woo. But when it gets taken over by bears, their parents decide to send them to the next camp over: Camp Bigfoot, run by the eccentric Uncle Squatch. That is even better—they love monsters, and Harper really wants to see and draw the actual Bigfoot. But not everything is as it seems at the camp. Can Harper trust the other campers who tell her Bigfoot is fake? Or should she listen to her new friend that claims she is a werewolf? All will be revealed at the campout under the full moon. The latest in the “Goosebumps House of Shivers” series tells a story about summer camps that is just spooky enough for any kid who loves the thrill of reading about monsters. The plot is engaging and playful but feels too quickly paced at times for a story that’s supposed to take place over the summer season. The narrative falters on worldbuilding, and while both siblings are presented as the leads, Dylan fades into a side character when they arrive at camp. Character description is minimal.
VERDICT Just spooky and silly enough for every “Goosebumps” fan, this is a recommended addition to juvenile fiction collections.
