Gr 5–8—After a savage beating from her stepfather lands her mother in the hospital, Carly Connors feels lost and betrayed. Distrustful of everyone and placed into foster care with a family that has three boys, including one her age, Carly has a hard time accepting the Murphys' affection. But Mrs. Murphy listens to her and cares for her, and the two younger boys are sweethearts. Then Carly learns something that sends her reeling. Narrator Nora Hunter brings difficult subject matter to life with heart and tact. Hunter's unique voice captures the personality of a young teenage girl in distress. The plot is well developed, and the characters are strong. Although some of the dialogue feels a little forced at times, the narrator did navigate it well.
VERDICT Listeners who like realistic fiction will enjoy this touching story.
