K-Gr 2—The newest additions to this series continue the guess-and-find game, this time taking readers through a growing season in a vegetable garden, on an airplane trip from check-in to landing, and on a visit to a space station from liftoff to safe return to Earth. Children will enjoy the clear and colorful illustrations, which are crucial to getting a sneak peek at what happens behind the scenes. In Plane, some scenarios seem a bit contrived, such as looking behind a person in the airport to see the ticket agent, but airplane enthusiasts and nervous first-time fliers will enjoy learning about the engines and storage compartments. Vegetable Garden features a plethora of insects and plants, using short, friendly sentences to introduce a large, diverse ecosystem within a small plot of land—this is a great read-aloud for the start of a gardening unit.
VERDICT Space Station and Vegetable Garden will make excellent additions to public library collections, while Plane is best only where airplane books are in high demand.
