K-Gr 2—A twist on the children's song "B-I-N-G-O," this story is written in a four-line poetic form and features Pablo, who brings his speckled, white-and-reddish brown Holstein to school to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The rhyme scheme is awkward and does not flow off the tongue smoothly. In the library the Western books are displayed on yellow bales. "The smell of heno so close by/Inside the LMC-o-/A book boss who is not amused,/Hotter than habanero." The calf creates a mess every place he visits: the classroom, art room, the gym, cafeteria, and awards ceremony, until the music teacher do-si-do-o's him out the front doors. Spanish words are interspersed throughout the text. An easy flan recipe, a bit of Cinco de Mayo history, and the lyrics to "R-O-D-E-O" round out the presentation. Silly and fun digital cartoons capture Rodeo's playful disposition, and Pablo shows various expressions from angst, to fear, to joy as his pet puts him through turmoil.—Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX
