Gr 2-4–A young boy named Sam explores his new city after moving. He falls in love with the graffiti that adorns the buildings, and is disappointed when one of his favorite pieces is painted over. With the help of his cousin, he finds a warehouse where young artists have been given the space and creative freedom to decorate it however they want. The illustrations are vibrantly colorful. While an afterword states that the author is not a graffiti artist, the works he creates within this book jump off the page. Furthermore, the afterword helps young readers—and their grownups—unpack the significance of this artform and its outlaw status
VERDICT A worthy addition to any collection, provocative and perfect for starting conversations about the definition of art, its many forms, as well as its gatekeepers.
