Gr 6 Up—The first program in a series of eight about nutrition, healthy eating habits, and the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle explains what nutrition is and the function of macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins). The hosts and animated characters cover many facts while clowning and keeping things light. They explain that human energy is derived from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and the function and value of these nutrients. Simple and complex carbohydrates, saturated and unsaturated fats, and animal and plant proteins are discussed. Micronutrients, vitamins, and minerals are briefly explained (they will receive more in-depth coverage in the fourth program of the series). Over and under consumption of food and the consequences are discussed, and appropriate portion size is explained. Middle school students will be engaged by the use of some humorous vignettes and well-done graphics. Especially useful for viewers who have not taken a course in biology.—
