Gr 5—8— In the second installment (2013) of Rodkey's series, Egg, short for Eggbert, and his best friend Guts have secured a map and are seeking the lost Okalu tribe's hidden treasure. In a bittersweet turn of events, the boys are joined by the mysteriously beautiful Okalu refugee Kira and Millicent, the daughter of Roger Pembroke, the vicious slaver who has been chasing Egg since he narrowly escaped Deadweather Island. Will Egg discover the treasure before Pembroke? Is Millicent trustworthy enough to stay on Egg's side? And why exactly is the pirate Burn Healy being so kind to Egg? Mystery, adventure, and some tween angst make this a wonderful choice for listeners looking for a new adventure series. Fred Berman keeps the listeners entertained through the quick twists and turns of the plot. Familiarity with the first book, Deadweather and Sunrise (2012, both Putnam), is recommended, and a cliffhanger ending sets the stage for next episode. Purchase where the first book is popular, or purchase both at once.
