Gr 9 Up—Aficionados of military history will find this presentation well worth their time. Black-and-white footage, taken over a period of 70 years, documents the advent and evolution of the special forces units who have become known as the U.S. Navy SEALs. Established in the early 1940s, the Naval Combat Demolition Units were tasked with clearing mines from the beaches of Nazi-held France so that the invading Allied Forces could land. Referred to at various times as Navy frogmen, underwater demolition teams, and maritime units, these highly trained teams have seen action in just about every military action since World War II, including but not limited to Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, and the capture of Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden. The entire presentation is comprised of vintage footage of training, military action, and recent interviews of retired SEALs and their predecessors. A disproportionate amount of time is spent on the Vietnam era; however, the force was an integral part of that war.
VERDICT PBS has again produced another outstanding documentary. Purchase where there is adequate interest and need.
