Gr 7 Up—This program about the new dietary guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which replace the old food pyramid with the MyPlate graphic, is hosted by a young woman who explains the new model and how it promotes health. She discusses the four sections of the MyPlate graphic—fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins—and explains how diet and exercise are linked in a lifestyle. Food provides the energy in calories that each person needs, and exercise is an essential activity for using the calories. Nutrient-dense foods are described as those from the basic food groups that provide vitamins and minerals, as well as energy and building blocks for growing bodies. Sugar, fat, and salt are nutrients that should be consumed in moderation. Portion management is suggested as the key to enjoying one's favorite foods without gaining weight. With animated characters and actors role-playing scenes, the lessons are convincingly taught. Chapter selection is optional. The supplemental materials, available in PDF format on the DVD, include chapter summaries, pre- and post-tests, student activities, fact sheets, and teacher resources. A good choice for nutrition education for middle and high school students.—
