Gr 9 Up—This documentary begins with a question: What is the highest peak in Southeast Asia? Gamlang Razi or Hkakabo Razi? A multinational team of five Americans and two Burmese set out to climb Gamlang Razi to obtain an accurate measurement. Myanmar has some of the last unexplored areas on Earth. Many of the areas have had very limited exposure to the modern world. (The film covers a brief history of the country, which is important for context.) The team has to travel on foot for 270 miles just to reach the base of the mountain, and throughout the expedition encounters and overcomes challenges, such as terrain, weather, and a wide range of biodiversity. For those that make the climb, learning about the people and culture of Myanmar becomes equally as important as the summit. The running time makes this a good option for a history class and an example of man vs. nature.
VERDICT Because of its mix of history and real-life adventure, this is a good addition to multimedia collections.
