PreS-Gr 1—In this sequel to
My Humongous Hamster (Holt, 2014), readers learn what the adventurous rodent is up to next. He goes to school, of course. Pet day gives this ordinary size hamster the opportunity to eat all of the lunches in the room, grow to mammoth proportions, and caper around the halls. Shrinking him back to size takes a big group hug from the whole class. When his mom asks about his day, the protagonist reports that pet day was boring so as not to get his furry friend in any trouble. The hilarity of this book comes from the photo collages, which show the enormous hamster participating in everyday school activities such as art class, recess, and lunch. Young audiences will enjoy this visual delight, as each page reveals an even more absurd image; the gargantuan hamster in a pink tutu is a hoot.
VERDICT Sure to be a silly storytime favorite that will spark lots of young imaginations to visualize their pets as giants, too.
