PreS-K–This title explores various aspects of friendship and the different types of companions in children’s lives. For example, “Mossy is a good friend to be quiet with. We don’t always have to talk. Sometimes we just sit and dream together.” But with Ezza, watching clouds is the preferred diversion. There is even an imaginary friend. Text is short with most pages having only one line. The simple, childlike illustrations depict rounded, thimble shaped characters. One line might confuse some children in the United States. It refers to drinking “hot squash” with a friend while listening to music. This is a sugary beverage common in England. The very last page encourages discussion. A dog wearing a paper hat asks, “Now you’ve met my friends, tell me about yours.”
VERDICT A recommended read-aloud for storytime and small group sharing.
