PreS-Gr 2—Readers are invited along on a fun road trip as a boy introduces his family members and their stuffed animals. And since some of them are quite large, part of the story's charm is the way they are accommodated on this journey. The title opens with "My daddy has an elephant/He got when he was three./It travels with us everywhere./It's quite a sight to see!" Although the car looks full, readers next see the narrator giving a giant teddy bear a piggyback ride. They squeeze into the back of the station wagon, and their luggage rides on top. Then his large extended family begin to pile into the car. Riders include his sister, brother, cousin, uncle, auntie, grandma, and grandpa and even the family dog. The trip ends with a visit to see Mommy and the twin baby brothers (and identical brand-new polar bears). Large, colorful illustrations are perfectly suited to group sharing. This is a road trip that many will want to take.
VERDICT A solid choice for library collections.
