Gr 3–5—Human body systems get the DK treatment in this effective visual guide. Each spread offers quick facts and details about different anatomical mechanisms. Captioned illustrations dominate the pages, with photos scattered throughout. Microscopic views of cells, glands, bacteria, viruses, and other body components are also included. Twelve body systems are covered. The brain and nervous system get the most attention, while information on reproductive parts and reproduction is minimal and includes only strategic cross sections of interior female parts and no mention whatsoever of male anatomy. A bonus is the spread about aging, which features images of adults and facts about skin and bone changes—a topic not often addressed in works for this age group.
VERDICT An imperfect but enlightening overview of body systems for a wide audience. Large collections will want to consider.
