Gr 4–8—Fans of lists, particularly those of the top 10 variety, will appreciate these slim entries to the field of pop culture record-holders. Four major subjects—movies and television, music and theater, sports, and technology—are represented in this series, and within each volume, there are five lists that document the top record holders for such standard fare as "Highest-Earning Movies of All Time" (Movies and TV Top Tens) as well as quirkier, unexpected categories ("Highest Scorers in the WNBA" in Sports Top Tens). Donovan explains the criteria she used when ranking the items in each list, using facts and statistics to make the determinations. While current at the time of publication, some data has changed in the time since, affecting the currency and validity of her lists. For instance, Katy Perry has surpassed Taylor Swift for the number one spot on the "Musicians with the Most Digital Singles Sales" list, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. Although the titles don't contain a ton of material, the aim isn't to be a comprehensive reference tool. Instead, these are springboards for readers to create their own top 10 lists. Suggested topics and print and online resources are provided to help guide the audience through the process. Give this to young enthusiasts of the "Guinness World Record" books.—Audrey Sumser, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Mayfield, OH
Five annotated top-ten lists (e.g., "Highest-Earning Video Game Companies"; "Best-Selling Green Cars") give a broad, unfocused glimpse at technology's general influence. Accompanied by colorful photos, each entry includes a brief paragraph with some context and relevant statistics. The book concludes by encouraging readers to research and create their own top-ten lists, suggesting alternative topics. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind.
