K-Gr 2—Bruce is a grumpy bear who just wants to be left alone. His one pleasure in life is eating eggs, and he prepares them with the help of elaborate recipes he discovers on the Internet. After collecting goose eggs for his newest culinary delight, Bruce is in for a surprise when the eggs unexpectedly hatch. Bruce tries to return the newly hatched goslings to their mother's nest only to learn she has flown south early. It's too late anyway: the babies have imprinted on him and follow him everywhere, no matter how hard he tries to lose them. This humorous tale of mistaken identity comes to life thanks to an array of fitting background sounds, including Bruce's unhappy grunts, sighs, and growls. Instrumental background music also rises and falls, echoing the story's drama, and narrator Robertson Dean's deep voice perfectly captures Bruce's grumpy nature. The grainy, old-school production quality gives this DVD the feel of a time-honored classic.
VERDICT Students will love watching Bruce's many attempts to rid himself of the goslings, and teachers will appreciate curricular connections to topics such as imprinting, life cycles, hibernation, and migration.
