PreS-Gr 2–An unseen narrator, in the person of the moon, grants a series of wishes upon the world and the creatures and people who inhabit it. “If I were the moon…I would wax and wane over the Earth’s troubles…give a voice to those who need it…be a beacon for the lost and lonely.” Lovely spreads on which the benevolent moon always appears, once even as a reflection in a pond, depict it shining on ocean creatures as well as polar bears in a snow-covered landscape. It shines in the forest, among the birds of the air, and provides light to guide a lone traveler and his dog across the water. The illustrations, rendered in mixed media, ink, and colored pencils greatly enhance the lyrical text.
VERDICT This is best suited as a bedtime lullaby for one-on-one sharing.
