Gr 10 Up—Not just for students of economic fundamentals, this video touches on environmentalism, psychology, and political philosophy. Topics covered include: "What Is Money?" "The Growth Economy," "Scarcity and the Global Casino," "Planet Finance and the House of Cards," "The New Economy," and "The New Culture of Money." Money is described as the lubricant of the economy and an agreement between traders, which converts relationships into services. Throughout, many authors and advocates share their experience and expertise, including Rebecca Adamson, an indigenous economics advocate; Riane Eisler, author of The Real Wealth of Nations; Lynne Twist, author of The Soul of Money; Juliet Schor, professor of sociology at Boston College; and John Perkins, author of Confessions of an Economic Hitman. The final chapters extol a new economic model and a new culture of money. The program is visually rich, with still and video images from around the world, and it presents many facts about the American monetary and economic systems. While advocating alternative economic systems, the program does not demonize capitalism per se. Viewers are encouraged to consider new standards for judging success and living one's life.
