¡Mistaco!: Un recuento de tragedias y tortillas

Gr 1-4–This picture book is a family-sized romp through Izzy’s short-fuse existence on a very bad day. One mistake at school pushes her over the edge, just as her family is preparing a huge gathering at home. Lito, her abuelito, leans into Izzy’s misfortune while they roll out tortilla dough then shows her that it’s best to eat one’s fragile “mis-tacos” rather than let them weigh you down. Other family members join in the fun as they share stories of past blunders and munch on their own mis-tacos. Each page illustrates a lively scene featuring Izzy’s close-knit family to show that everyone makes mistakes. Depicted across the skin tone spectrum, her relatives use a mix of Spanish and English throughout their conversations. Suggestions for making mis-tacos are presented at book’s end to bring home the message that being vulnerable and learning from errors makes a person stronger.
