Gr 1–3—When Ming's mother takes him to a museum to see the Terracotta Army of Qin Shihuang, she buys him a figurine as a souvenir. That night, he dreams that the General comes to life and takes him to see the rest of the army. Ming learns more about the masouleum and the soldiers before returning safely to his bed just in time to wake up. This gentle adventure serves as an introduction to China's Terracotta Army, with Ming meeting several different types of soldiers who tell him about themselves. Captions for the watercolor illustrations give even more information for curious readers. Despite the fact that the soldiers were originally painted vivid colors, Li paints them all in somber browns, making Ming the bright focus on each spread.—Jennifer Rothschild, Arlington County Public Libraries, VA
