PreS-Gr 3—Milo is a failed magician who is given one last chance by the theater manager: he has to pull a rabbit out of a hat. Searching for a rabbit, however, proves futile. Luckily, he chances upon a bear with an unusual talent, and Milo and his assistant are soon famous. However, bears need to hibernate, and Milo will be partnerless once again. Unless, of course, his bear can teach him a trick or two. Jon Agee's whimsical and deceptively simple tale (Hyperion, 2001) dances off the screen, thanks to the lively delivery of Kirby Heyborne, with occasional sound effects and energetic piano music. Agee's bold, child-friendly illustrations are scanned, and only lightly animated. This allows viewers to fully enjoy the quirky tale with little distraction.
VERDICT A charming production that will tickle children and adults.
