PreS-Gr 3—When Milo's mom gets a new job and he and his family have to move, the boy decides that he will never have fun again. Milo's younger sister, Georgie, however, treats the move as an opportunity and longs to explore her new community. Unwilling to accompany her, Milo ties the string from a ball of yarn around Georgie's waist and tells her that he'll pull on it when she has to come home. One day, Milo yanks, but Georgie doesn't return, so he follows the yarn out into the world of his new home to find her. Strings of yarn throughout the vibrant, exuberant collage illustrations create a sense of narrative continuity that the sometimes clunky text lacks. The author's ingenious use of yarn to lead Milo out of the house and the parade of Georgie's new neighborhood friends who join him in searching for her will delight readers. Though the text is lackluster, it doesn't detract from the lively, engaging presentation and its handy lesson on overcoming defeatism.
VERDICT This is a unique addition to the body of children's books on adjusting to a move, a theme that will resonate with many, and its depiction of the ways in which children adjust differently to change provides ample fodder for discussion.
