Gr 9 Up—Mira, a Sirminican who had to flee her homeland, joins the Glittering Court as a way to get to the new world of Adoria in the hopes that she can buy her brother's freedom, even if it is by marrying a wealthy man. On the journey over, Mira meets Grant Elliot, a spy who convinces her to spy on the suitors of the girls in the Glittering Court. Mira agrees for a price, but doesn't expect to fall for Grant. Mira becomes a pirate, a spy, and a potential bride, all to help free her brother, and she learns that she is truly not without options in this new world. Kyla Garcia's voice has a lyrical quality that draws readers into the story. The plot follows the same events as the first book, but from Mira's point of view, which provides more detail about Adoria and its inhabitants and adds more excitement.
VERDICT Fans of historical romances within imagined worlds will be drawn to this series.
