Gr 6–8—This title uses the concept of the micronation, or a made-up country, to explain what a nation is, how it functions, and what is required to keep it operating. Chapters cover physical geography, law and order, economy, infrastructure, cultural geography, and international relations. Liberally illustrated with black-and-white and gray-tone drawings, the book discusses basic concepts, offering current examples that students should be familiar with. Important or unfamiliar words are printed in bold face and then defined in "Words to Know" boxes on the same page, while "Fascinating Facts" can be found throughout. Readers will also find a total of 25 projects to create, such as a flag, money, a map, and laws. A marginal purchase, this book will require a dedicated, self-motivated student to achieve the author's fullest intent. It might be better to direct this one to social studies teachers for use as a guide in lesson planning preparation.—
