K-Gr 2–Cute, funny, and overall delightful. This story is narrated by a puppy who lives with Gus, a grumpy, grown-up dog. Gus doesn’t like much about Christmas until he learns there is more to it than decorations and sweaters. When Gus discovers that Christmas can be about spending time with his beloved puppy, he begins to come around. The book ends with a hilarious surprise. Illustrations in the book are colorful, engaging, and humorous. Students can make connections, predictions, and inferences with this text. There is an additional SEL perspective about happiness coming from connecting with and helping others. This story would be great for a read-aloud or lap reading.
VERDICT A funny and cute Christmas story, this is recommended for elementary collections.
