PreS-K–Melville, a purple aquatic youngster who most closely resembles a smiling balloon, roams the ocean searching for a place “just for me.” In looking for a quiet, cozy place, he dodges dangerous creatures and heads into unknown waters. He narrates his adventure with reassuring words that motivate him on his journey through the ocean and away from his home. But just like any young explorer, he tires and looks for something familiar and closer to home. He finds it in the arms of his mother. Schmid’s (
A Pet For Petunia) illustrations contain a variety of images children will find familiar (shark, crab, whale), fun (shipwreck), and possibly ask questions about (anemone).
VERDICT A quick, reassuring read about the comfort that comes from a loving hug. Not essential, but sweet.
