Gr 3–5—This Victorian-era, gothic-inspired story focuses on the misadventures of orphan Mel Foster, who manages a cheery disposition despite constantly landing himself in danger. Mel is forced into service on a ship bound for the North Pole, where he discovers a giant figure frozen in the ice. Mel accidentally awakens Eve Frankenstein, daughter of Dr. Frankenstein's original creation. Mel's kindness endears him to Eve, and the two develop a loyal friendship. Meanwhile, in London, Queen Victoria has fallen under the influence of her scheming butler, Mr. Burlington. Upon arrival in the city, Eve and Mel are chased by bounty hunters and find refuge with a group called the Monster Resistance. The group uncovers Burlington's plot for world domination and realizes Mel's mysterious origins could be the key to defeating the evil butler. This novel is extensively populated with literary legends such as David Copperfield and Dorian Gray, not all of whom middle grade readers will recognize. While familiarity with the original works isn't necessary, the story can sometimes feel bogged down by the litany of characters. The novel works best when it's focused on Mel, a plucky underdog who never sacrifices friendship for self-preservation. The lighter tone of the book emphasizes its humor over horror, which may broaden its appeal. This title is the first in a planned series.
VERDICT A zany period mystery for larger collections where readers prefer their monsters funny, not frightening.
