Toddler-PreS–A lovely ode to the Día de los Muertos holiday and tradition, with el Catrín and la Catrina at the center stage. The beloved couple come to “life” to start the celebration of welcoming new souls to the wonderful afterlife. Throughout the narrative, marigolds, monarch butterflies, pan de muerto, papel picado, sugar skulls, altars, and other iconographies are captured via color illustrations and bilingual text. Although some rhymes are clunky, and there are a few words that may be complicated for some younger children, it doesn’t minimize the love, praise, and care that is part of this important holiday of celebration and loved ones. The collage illustrations bring textures and life to this board book, emphasizing the colorful and cheerful nature of El Día de los Muertos.
VERDICT A fun take on the holiday for most holiday collections for little ones.
