K-Gr 2—This abstract allegory, adapted from T.H. Marshall's picture book of a boy's journey through life, is simple to the extreme. To a soft guitar accompaniment and no fanfare, Martin begins his journey and finds a Way, discovering that it feels good to find one and share it with others. Even though others find a different Way and one loses her Way, Martin realizes eventually there is no better or worse Way. Everyone needs to find the one best suited to them. Katarzyna Bukiert's soft, muted colored pencil illustrations combine elements of abstract design and detailed realism. Pete Cross's mellow voice stands out from the rudimentary animation, and his narration invites viewers to explore their own path.
VERDICT This DVD could be useful to educators looking for supplementary materials on social emotional learning.
