K-Gr 2–One rainy day, Button, a lonely teddy bear, decides to explore the attic in his house, a place he has never been before. The attic does not appear to be a scary place, but is rather a wonderland filled with all kinds of interesting and mysterious things, including a fire hat, toys, and a globe. He also finds a trunk covered in stickers from all over the world that is filled with more wondrous things, including an “Instant Friend” kit that contains a balloon and instructions. “Just add love and air” it says. After a few mishaps (in which Button remarks that making friends is harder than he thought) and a little magic, a purple balloon dog named Squeaky comes to life. Since Button has never had someone to love before, Squeaky gives Button a fabric heart to sew on his chest, and the two become fast friends. Button decides that making a friend isn’t so hard after all, with persistence. Richly colored, detailed pencil illustrations bring the magic to life.
VERDICT The first of an intended series, this is a fresh new friendship story with a classic feel, and is recommended for larger collections.
