PreS-Gr 1—Each spread in these unusual books includes a transparent page that interacts differently with the left and right leaves. For example, in
Magic Colors, the shape of a green face on the see-through page creates the image of a brown bear against a deep orange background on the left, and shows the image of a green frog against a yellow background on the right. In
Magic Opposites, an umbrella on the transparent page complements a beach scene on the right side and a rainy day on the left. Some of the other opposites featured include big/small, in/out, and left/right. Readers will find these clever and interactive page turns appealing. The targeted skills are simple, but slightly older readers will enjoy the novelty of the transparent page. The texts are minimal-yellow car, red train, orange sunset, in, and in/out-but the design is artful and instructs by showing.—
