Love, Diana: Boris the School Bully

HarperCollins. (I Can Read 1). Jun. 2022. 32p. pap. $4.99. ISBN 9780063204423.
Gr 1-3–Boris and his bully friends come to spoil a beautiful school day for Diana, Roma, Koko, and Dawn. These super friends transform themselves into heroes to save the day from the school bullies. Diana becomes the Princess of Play, and Roma becomes the Prince of Pretend. When mean Boris goes after the small kittycorn Koko by destroying her book, Roma is angry and comes to the rescue. He wants to teach the bully Boris a lesson, but Diana tells him not to. Blubber, the other bully, likes to pick on anyone smaller, like the gophers. When the super friends discover that their friend Honey has been trapped in a locker by the bullies, Dawn, the Duchess of Daring, sets Honey free by using a hair pin on the lock. In the end, Diana is the real hero of the story because she comes to the rescue by inviting the bullies to join in the fun with her and her friends. With beautiful illustrations to stimulate the imagination, short sentences, and familiar words that young readers will recognize and enjoy repeating, this book introduces children to the love of books.
VERDICT Young readers will be captivated by this story centered on lessons around the familiar themes of bullying, friendship, inclusiveness, love—and superheroes.
