PreS-Gr 2—A nice coop, good friends—what more could a French hen desire? Adventure, that's what! Louise's excursions start simply enough—a voyage, a trip to the circus, a visit to an exotic marketplace. However, she soon finds herself facing pirates, nearly becoming a lion's lunch, and rescuing enslaved chickens. Adventure is a fine thing, but she's is glad to know that home is always there—safe and secure, with an audience happy to live vicariously through her exploits. Award-winning author Kate DiCamillo's book (HarperCollins, 2008) is a lovely life lesson in the balance between security and risk. Debra Leigh narrates the story with a light touch, creating unique voices for all the characters. Background music echoes the theme of each tale as Harry Bliss's detailed illustrations are scanned, allowing viewers the chance to enjoy humorous details that might have been lost in a casual reading. An interview with the author provides insights into her writing process and her appreciation for the illustrator's contributions to the story. This fun presentation would be a logical launching point for writing projects on the types of adventures viewers might choose to enjoy.—Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA
