Gr 5–7—Life in the barrio is full of chores, babysitting, and sadness as 12-year-old Jacinta is missing her mom and forced to fill her role. When the youth center partners her with Miss, a locally famous news reporter, Miss becomes Jacinta's "Amiga," or mentor, teaches the girl new words, and gives Jacinta a new understanding of her world. As Miss helps Jacinta open her eyes to new possibilities, the girl still struggles with her problems at home. This book deals with a lot of heavy issues, namely undocumented immigration, poverty, and self-confidence, but it never lets those issues define the story. Jacinta is a multidimensional character who has faults and issues but is still relatable. Told from Jacinta's perspective, the book periodically uses Spanish words throughout its dialogue and narration. Marisol Ramirez's engaging narration will keep listeners tuned in to see how Jacinta's story turns out.
VERDICT This audiobook should be a first purchase for collections serving middle grade listeners. ["An interesting first novel that treats its complex characters with unusual dignity": SLJ 7/15 review of the Candlewick book.]
