Gr 4–7—For Fiona's 13th birthday, her "cackling super-villain" father gives her a flamethrower. She also lives in a old volcano and rides a helicopter to school, where two of her classmates, Ruby and Jai, also have super-villain parents. When Fiona's home comes under attack and her father is kidnapped, she has to step up into his role as leader and decide whether to ransom her father by giving up his nuclear super-weapon, the NOVA. Fiona learns more about the history and past alliances between her, Ruby's, and Jai's families as she tries to understand who took her father and who are her allies. Action-packed barely begins to describe this fast-paced adventure romp, which uses villainous conventions with many twists and turns. Superhero fans will enjoy the chases, fights, and technology, while Fiona's conflict over joining her family business will resonate with many preteens.
VERDICT While there isn't much depth to the characters, the pace and drama will appeal to even reluctant readers.
