PreS-Gr 1—A small, lively gray tabby cat named Lola plays at the park and finds a dropped ballet slipper. She follows the slipper's owner to a dance performance, where she watches, enthralled. Backstage, she tries on multiple costumes before making her on-stage debut as a bumblebee. She somehow knows the dance steps perfectly and wows the crowd—until she trips and literally brings everything and everyone around her crashing down. Of course, Lola puts it all to rights and is even invited back. The story line is slight, and older readers may wonder how Lola learned her dance steps. Younger readers will simply love the bright watercolor illustrations and the adorable, energetic kitty in a tutu.
VERDICT Give this title to young fans of all things ballet and kitty. Together, they're a winning combination.

Lively cat Lola (Little Lola) happens upon a children's ballet recital, grabs a spare costume, and joins the performance. When a prop goes haywire, Lola somehow manages to fix the damage and the show goes on. While neither the simple text nor the pictures make clear exactly how Lola saves the day, sprightly watercolor illustrations underscore the energy in Lola's story.
