PreS-Gr 1—Frisky spreads depict Little Lola's joyful day at school. The curious stray cat discovers, then dons, human attire and boards a school bus. Once in class, she writes her name, does math, and enjoys goldfish-shaped crackers. Despite her gaffe of presenting a live mouse at show-and-tell, Lola's clean-up skills permit an invitation to return the next day. Gothard depicts spot-on feline expressions and Lola's wardrobe, which includes pink eyeglasses, red sneakers, and leggings, is charming. Lola's impressive academic skills despite her humble beginnings may puzzle some readers who also might question her contentment at returning to the streets at night. Nonetheless, this is a fun and energetic introduction to the school experience.—
Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VALittle Lola, a cat, "has big plans." She dresses herself as a kid, hops on the bus, and goes to school. Lola manages to fit right in...until her show-and-tell mouse gives her away and disrupts everything. Gothard's watercolor art combines a retro look with comic action and brings Lola vividly to life, though her human counterparts appear stiff in comparison.
