Little Ghostie: Finger Puppet Book

Chronicle. Sept. 2022. 12p. pap. $7.99. ISBN 9781797212883.
Baby-Toddler–At dusk on Halloween night, Little Ghostie sets out on a countdown adventure, narrating the sights and sounds of the town’s spooky celebrations. Pumpkins, black cats, witches, haunted houses, and a silver moon are among the Halloween staples of Little Ghostie’s flight through town. Each illustration varies in perspective, with the narrator sitting in the middle of some scenes and viewing others from a distance, as a ghost certainly would. Dove’s digital illustrations are peppered with details and a handful of reappearing critters—a mouse, spider, and bat—which create seek-and-find opportunities within the story. The opening phrase has an awkward cadence: “Wee Little Ghostie, it’s a Halloween night. Will you fly around and show us all the sights?” However, the rhythm of the rest of the text is perfect.
VERDICT Simple, interactive, and a serviceable introduction to all of the Halloween essentials for the youngest of readers. Recommended for holiday collections that can accommodate very small board books.
