Gr 1-4–Based on the folk song, “This Little Light of Mine,” this book is a strong message to remind readers that they are in a position to make wonderful positive changes, based on their own efforts but also the efforts of those who came before them. Labeled pictures show famous Black Americans, including Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Shirley Chisholm next to other unnamed individuals working towards academic, family, or work-related goals. The rhythm of the text connects with the song and will make it an enjoyable read-aloud. The warm-colored, graphic artwork shows a diverse group of dark-skinned people celebrating successes of all kinds.
VERDICT This would make an excellent classroom book for units on history, but it also works for its uplifting message and positive affirmations.
