PreS-Gr 2—Popov's picture book is a tale about eradicating boredom and fear with a positive attitude. When a cheerful frog wearing red befriends an unhappy frog wearing black, they venture down a river on a boat made of leaves. As they float past a beautiful backdrop of flowers and vines, they encounter obstacles and setbacks, but they never give up. One frog's positive statements ("Let's try to make things better") always follow the other frog's negative declarations ("I knew we should have slowed down."). By the end of the story, both frogs have become optimists. This is reflected in their mannerisms and clothing. The full-bleed artwork is expressive and engaging.
VERDICT A book that teaches children to see the positive in life is a story well worth sharing.
