K-Gr 2—Through rhyming text, Kane explores the day-to-day activities and building relationship between a girl and her kitten. The book touches on kitten habits such as grooming, snoozing, and exploring. However, as the nameless narrator takes readers through the story, she focuses on one task at a time, and the text becomes rather monotonous. There is no real climax or plot building here, and many children will lose interest by the middle. The illustrations, done in pencil, watercolor, and colored pencil, are reminiscent of 1990s picture books that have long since lost their shine and are not striking enough to combat the lackluster elements of the story. An additional purchase at best.—Ashley Prior, Lincoln Public Library, RI
"I love Kitty and Kitty loves me. / He comes when I call him...usually." In rhyming couplets, a girl describes her relationship with her cat and his daily activities and habits. While the verses are strained and often sentimental, they're generally inviting and accessible to new readers. The realistic illustrations are warm and softly textured.
