PreS-Gr 2–This book guides parents and young cooks through their first experiences in the kitchen together. Each recipe has kid-friendly instructions with large print and colorful illustrations, as well as a full-color photograph of the finished product; some recipes also include photos of intermediate steps. A fun inclusion is diary-style prompts for each recipe: “I Made This On,” “Who Helped,” etc., which encourage young chefs to reflect on what they’ve accomplished. Usual kid fare, such as simple smoothies and raw vegetable designs are included, but the recipes, which are rated with one to three oven mitts based on difficulty, also incorporate more challenging dishes like herbed salmon with asparagus. The recipes encourage young chefs to familiarize themselves with a variety of techniques and appliances, including blenders and slow cookers. In the back matter are additional tips for grown-ups to help youngsters succeed in the kitchen.
VERDICT A beginner cookbook that young chefs can grow into, with helpful tips for adults as well. A recommended purchase.
