But dark magic once banished by the Guardians has begun to resurface, and it's up to Kaya and her new powers to prevent its return. "Tailwands" quickly establishes a surprisingly rich mythology and backstory within the first two volumes; though the story initially gets off to a slow start, the second installment focuses on showing the strong bond between the two siblings and their magic in action. This is the start of a wonderful series that shows promise.
VERDICT Fans of Jeff Smith's "Bone" and Kazu Kibuishi's "Amulet" series (both Scholastic/GRAPHIX) might be willing to give this hidden gem a chance.
