Gr 2–4—Katie Stagliano tells her own story of growing a cabbage for a third grade project. Shocked to learn that some people go to bed hungry, she was moved to find a way to feed them with the cabbage that grew to be huge under her loving care. When it is harvested and weighed, her cabbage clocks in at an amazing 40 pounds, and Katie assists serving it with ham and rice at the Tricounty Family Ministries soup kitchen. The primitive, childlike illustrations on every page amplify the straightforward text and portray a loving family and caring community. Katie is the youngest recipient of the Clinton Global Citizen Award for Leadership in Civil Society in 2012. However, her story comes across as well meaning, but rather flat and stilted.
VERDICT An additional purchase where youth service narratives are in demand.
