Gr 9 Up—Each chapter explores the topic in depth, from whether or not juvenile crime is on the rise and young girls are more involved in crime to whether or not rehabilitation works as it is. The style of writing is dry and difficult to get through. The book is text-heavy, with few photos and charts. Many of the statistics are only as current as 2007 and 2008, which will limit the book's usefulness for reports. Students will be better off looking for current articles using online resources.—Esther Keller, I.S. 278, Marine Park, NY
This volume attempts to delve into the problem of juvenile delinquency by offering different perspectives on the issue. The text presents excerpts from previously published periodicals of varying repute. They're all supported by facts and figures that supposedly prove the author's argument, making it difficult to judge even the most basic claim (e.g., is violence involving girls increasing or decreasing?).
