Gr 3–6—This abridged version of London's classic focuses on some of its most dangerous and thrilling adventures. Readers' decisions will either keep the dog alive and venturing deeper into the wilds during the Alaskan gold rush, or take them to the dreaded page 73, "The End." Buck is kidnapped and taken to Alaska, where he is sold to drive a dog sled. He has to learn obedience to new owners, how to drive the sled, how to survive in the cold with little food, and how to stay alive in a pack of rugged Huskies. A wrong move could end this adventure early. This would be a good introduction to the book for younger students, but it might spoil the fun of reading the original.
