PreS-Gr 2—The original characters from Mr. Rogers's Land of Make Believe spring to life through computer-generated animation in this winning series that carries on Fred Rogers's messages of kindness and civility. Each of the eight episodes follows a formula in which a theme is conveyed through a song that characters sing repeatedly and Daniel's invitation to viewers to make believe with him during fantasy sequences. The cub imagines that he is marching with ants, singing with frogs, inside a seashell, and that things he makes of sand are real. If there is one encompassing idea that unites this collection, it's introduced in the first segment: there's so much to explore when you're outside. Daniel looks closely at ants carrying leaves to their ant hill and birds collecting materials for nest building. During Daniel's Nature Walk, he and his friend O the Owl explore tree bark and sap and find a forest creatures. He and Katerina Kittycat learn how to stay safe at the beach, and Daniel and his friends clean up the playground after a wind storm. He learns that everyone is big enough to do something and that some activities improve with practice. During teaching moments, viewers learn concepts as they are asked to identify items, count, or predict what comes next. Live-action shorts of children engaging in actions related to each episode follow.
VERDICT Gentle and tuneful messages delivered by lovable characters will make fans of young viewers who will request return trips to Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.—Constance Dickerson, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library, OH
